The Radford University campus is located in Radford, Virginia, about 40 miles southwest of Roanoke, VA. View driving directions to Radford University. An email will be sent about a week before the Gathering with details on where to arrive on campus for Check-In.

Whether you are looking for or can offer a ride to Radford, you can indicate your interest in carpooling when you register for YAY. You’ll receive an email from FGC to tell you how to contact other carpoolers.

The closest airport is the Roanoke-Blacksburg (ROA) regional airport, ~40 miles / 42 minutes by car from campus.

We highly recommend purchasing a refundable ticket or travel insurance, as all participants must have a negative COVID test before arriving at the Gathering.

FGC is offering limited courtesy shuttle rides between Radford and the Roanoke Airport for YAY Gathering participants on Wednesday 7/6 and Sunday 7/10. To reserve a spot on the shuttle, sign up here. There is also an option on the YAY Gathering registration form to sign up for carpooling (offer or request a ride). You can also reserve a private shuttle with ETCLIMO, a private vehicle rental company or hire a taxi from the airport. We ask all passengers and drivers to wear masks during transport to limit COVID exposure leading up to the YAY Gathering.

Amtrak Train

For the train to Gathering, the closest station is the Roanoke, VA Amtrak Station. Roanoke is served by one train per day coming from the north on the Northeast Regional train, and is the end of a spur line.

We highly recommend purchasing a refundable ticket or travel insurance, as all participants must have a negative COVID test before arriving at the Gathering.

Luggage limitations. We recommend reading Amtrak Carry-on Baggage and Amtrak Special Items (scroll down to Baby Items) or contacting Amtrak if you have questions about luggage limitations.

FGC staff are still exploring options on how to get from the train station to Radford campus. The shuttle service we contracted to use for the 2020 Gathering went out of business during the pandemic. We will update this page when we have more information about train station transportation.

Megabus stops at the Christiansburg, VA Park n Ride, about 14 miles from Radford. To get from Christiansburg to Radford, we suggest using a rideshare service (listed below.) The line that stops in Christiansburg runs between Washington, DC, and Atlanta, GA. To search schedules and purchase a ticket, visit the Megabus website.

Public Transportation

There is not public transit that serves Radford in the summer, aside from an in-town bus. Both Lyft and Uber operate in Radford and the surrounding area. Text-a-Cab operates in Blacksburg and Christiansburg, VA.

Travel Grant Opportunities

There will be travel grants from Philadelphia Yearly Meeting available for young adults age 18 – 35 from the PhlYM area – apply when you register.

Friends of Color can apply to the Bayard Rustin Fund for travel grants to FGC events.
