FGC Welcomes New Communications Manager Rashid Darden

FGC is pleased to announce that Rashid Darden has joined the organization as our Communications Manager. We feel lucky to have hired someone with so much storytelling experience. As a novelist, a nonprofit leader, and a Quaker, Rashid brings a wealth of unique expertise to this position.

Rashid is a convinced Friend and member of Friends Meeting of Washington.  He worships both there and with FGC Friends of Color.

Rashid comes to FGC with extensive non-profit experience in communications and outreach, as well as operations and development. Organizations he has worked with include Damien Ministries, a faith-based HIV/AIDS service organization, DC Recovery Community Alliance, and National Campaign to Stop Violence. He has also been an alternative school educator teaching writing and language arts to teenagers and young adults, most recently at YouthBuild DC Public Charter School.

Rashid now resides in Conway, North Carolina, where he pursues his writing career and volunteer activities in a peaceful environment. Rashid writes contemporary LGBT fiction and urban fantasy. Since moving to Conway he has completed his 7th and 8th books.  FGC hopes that managing our communications department will complement his writerly life in the woods and fields of North Carolina.

He is not only a Friend but also a loyal Brother. Rashid is a member of several fraternal organizations, including Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, where he volunteers on a regional committee, and Gamma Xi Phi, a professional fraternity founded by Black artists which he leads as National President.

Some might say he is a young Gen X-er, and others might call him a geriatric Millenial.  Rashid more precisely claims the Xennial microgeneration (1977-1983) that came of age with the communications innovations of the internet. He looks forward to using all his acquired knowledge of websites and social media—and the lessons he’s learned from developing a career as a novelist—to now support his faith community.
