Book Musings: Light in Winter

Send date: February 2nd, 2021

Dear Friend,

Some winters, the cold chills me to the bone. This year a different kind of cold goes deeper, to my soul.

I’m buoyed by a quote from Albert Camus: “In the midst of winter, I found there was, within me, an invincible summer.” Someone shared that with me years ago, and it was one step in my journey to  being a convinced Friend. I hope the Inner Light shines for you, too, through this very challenging time.

Suggestions for curling up with a good book can be found in our Black History Month Collection and the February Friends Journal reviewed books.

Any Bookstore questions? I’m happy to answer them.

Vital Friends: Looking forward to the FGC Gathering this summer? Read this!

Send date: February 6th, 2021

Dear Friend,

We’re working full speed to bring you this summer’s FGC Gathering! Whether in-person or virtual, as the 2021 Gathering will be, I am grateful for a space where, as Gathering Conference Coordinator Lori Piñeiro Sinitzky put it: “We can lean on each other, learn from one another, worship together, and share our hope together.” Keep reading to view our virtual programming schedule and evening plenary speakers line-up.

Early Registration for the Gathering begins April 15th – save the date and register early at FGCgathering.org so you are more likely to get your first workshop choice!

In addition to a special look at FGC Gathering 2021: Way Will Open, this issue features upcoming events from the Ministry on Racism Program, an article about Gathering Youth Programming by Marian Dalke, information about FGC’s new t-shirt contest, the final installment on helping your meeting become actively anti-racist from Carolyn Lejuste and David Etheridge, ways to celebrate Library Lovers’ Month, and much more.

Our annual digital #QuakerValentines cards will be unveiled on Valentine’s Day, so visit FGC’s social media channels that day to view them and share one with your beloved!

In Friendship,

Gathering February 2021 Update: Friday Plenary Announced!

Send date: February 24th, 2021

Dear Friend,

“It was wonderful to gather with Friends from all over, many of whom would probably not have been able to participate at all if the Gathering was only in-person.”

We received many expressions of appreciation like this one after the 2020 Virtual Gathering. Hosting FGC’s annual summer event online in 2020 made it possible for many people from across the Quaker landscape to attend. We can’t wait to see who will join us this summer!

I’m excited to share that Tara Houska will be our Friday Evening Plenary Speaker! Tara (Couchiching First Nation Anishinaabe) is a tribal attorney, founder of Giniw Collective, and is currently engaged in the movement to defund fossil fuel use.

Don’t miss:

  • The complete Evening Programs line-up!
  • Help us select the topics for Community Connections, the Tuesday evening plenary, by participating in our survey.

Please join us for the 2021 FGC Gathering: Way Will Open, June 27th – July 3rd.

In service,
Lori Piñeiro Sinitzky
Gathering Conference Coordinator
