West Knoxville Friends Meeting

Meeting for Worship Options

We're meeting in person and we're using zoom.

To ask questions about joining us use the "contact us" button in the right hand column.

After we receive your request, we will contact you.

Welcome to our community of Friends. To find out more about what to expect at a Quaker Meeting, navigate around our site and check out the resources page.

Fellowship is an important aspect of worshiping with us.  Zoom has allowed us to hold onto our sense of community even when we are unable to meet together in person. For those who choose to worship at the meetinghouse, we are asking attendees to wear masks. Depending on the availability of somoene to run the electronic equipment, there may not be zoom running in the meetinghouse every Sunday but there should always be a zoom option on line.  Friends are welcome to use a personal device to stream zoom in the meetinghouse but only one device should be zooming at a time within the meetinghouse.  If no one is able to use zoom at the meetinghouse we may have Meeting for Worship as two groups, one on zoom and one at the meetinghouse.
Due to the changing health conditions in our local community, you may arrive at the meetinghouse and find no one else is there. We apologize if this occurs.  Please consider using the zoom option for meeting if you are unable to access the meetinghouse.

We are grateful we have the ability to begin worshiping together again and regret that there may be a compromise to the spiritual nature of meeting and fellowship electronically.  We hope our remotely located Friends will continue to join us and new Friends will discover us through the use of zoom or in person. If you experience challenges to meeting on zoom, please provide feedback to the Electronic Communications Committee.

Check out the different areas of our site to see what we've been doing lately and what we believe is important. If an activity speaks to your soul, you are welcome to get involved or follow silently.  We are open to new experiences, so make recommendations on how we can be more welcoming by providing what interests you.

Things we take note of and reflect upon:

- Caring for humanity - seeing that of God in everyone. We use our spiritual practices of silent worship and worship sharing to reflect on how to navigate our differences and embrace others. We take actions to help those in our community and beyond who need support.

- Understanding racial justice - our historical role and our current response.  We explore this topic through discussion groups, involvement in the community, extrernal sources of information and activities, and interactions with our Yearly Meeting (SAYMA) and Friends General Conference (FGC).

- Understanding the earth - our responsibility to be stewards. We explore ways we can heal the damages humans cause and avoid future destruction including advocating for reduced materialism, recycling, awareness of our role in climate change, and advocating against the use of nuclear weapons.

About us

The West Knoxville Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends is a Quaker presence in East Tennesse. We are part of the Southern Appalacian Yearly Meeting and Association (SAYMA), affiliated with Friends General Conference (FGC). We invite you to join us in silent worship according to the traditional practice of Friends.  As an unprogrammed meeting, worship begins in reverent silence. There is no ritual, and we have no minister, but we are united in a conscious effort to know God, to understand divine purposes, and to bring ourselves into harmony with Spirit in our daily lives.

See our meeting times, calendar & events, or announcements sections to get involved.

What's New

Dear Friends,

On many First Days we have a second hour after our time in Silent Worship. January 16, 2022 our second hour was spent in gratitude and holding Friends in the Light.  The joys, challenges, gratitude, and requests for healing needs were especially meaningful to Friends as our time for celebrating and sharing can be pushed aside in our busy secular and spiritual lives.

Quakers gather for worship in silent expectation as a memorial to a Friend who has died. We believe that in the silence all people can experience God directly. Our memorial meeting has no pastor, no altar, no sermon, and no choir.
