Vitality: Faith-Based Support for Handling Finances Well

Sally Weaver Sommer, a member of Broadmead Friends Meeting in Lake Erie Yearly Meeting, has given generously of her time for decades, volunteering on a variety of FGC committees, including nominating and finance. Years ago, she and her husband Jon pledged to leave 3% of their estate to FGC in their will.
More recently, Sally and Jon decided to sell the small natural foods store they ran together for many years. A conversation with Everence helped them understand how, instead of paying capital gains taxes, they could open a donor-advised fund. It accrues interest and allows them to make tax-free gifts to FGC and other Quaker organizations. When they die, their kids can also use that fund to give back — just like Mom and Dad did. This strategy aligns with the example of generosity that Sally and Jon learned from their parents, and that they want to pass along to the next generation.
FGC has a long history of collaborating with Everence. They provide Friends with faith-based support and services that align financial stewardship with Quaker values.
There are so many ways to leave your legacy! Through financial planning, you may have the capacity to support yourself and loved ones while making a lasting impact on the Religious Society of Friends.
On Tuesday, November 17 at 3:30 p.m. EST, Everence will offer a free workshop on values-based estate planning. Friends can learn how to approach wills, trusts, and legacy giving in a way that reflects Quaker testimonies. Just in time for the holidays, this workshop will offer simple talking points so you can be prepared to have important conversations about your end-of-life plans with family and friends.
They’ll also share information on the new tax laws that allow you to get a tax deduction for your charitable gifts, even if you don’t itemize your taxes. Starting in 2026, you can take charitable deductions up to $1,000 as an individual or $2,000 for couples.
Register today for this free workshop!
As you prepare to share your gratitude for the important people in your life, consider learning more ways you can include them in your legacy as a Friend.
