Vital Friends: Quaker Spirituality in Virtual Spaces

Send Date: October 2nd, 2020

Dear Friend,

All of us are adapting to a new way of living this year, though no one has experienced a more significant shift in their daily lives than parents and teachers. In Quaker communities around North America, parents and religious educators are trying to find balance in their own lives while they also seek to nurture their children’s experiences of faith.

Thankfully, many Quaker parents and First Day School/religious education teachers are actively creating virtual events and web-based resources for children. We’ve gathered resources and reflections from Quaker parents and educators to share with you this month, plus virtual opportunities from the Spiritual Deepening and Ministry on Racism Programs, a message from FGC’s Development Team, and a round-up of virtual events in the Quaker community.

Between now and the next time I write to you, the world may move in an entirely new direction (hopefully toward a future that is more equitable and peaceful). As we pray and discern our role in the way forward, let us remember our guiding principles as Friends – that we are a people called to love and answer that of the Divine in one another.

In Friendship,
Marta Rusek
Communications Manager for FGC

Book Musings: Discernment

Send Date: October 6th, 2020

Dear Friend,

Lately, I’ve had more time to walk. As I do, bits of conversation from the past week tumble in my brain, mixing with joys, worries and reminiscences. The other day, crisp autumn air took me to my childhood neighborhood and I recalled something said by a dear friend at my father’s memorial service. “No matter how bad I felt when I got to Irene and Don’s, I always felt much better when I left.”

It hit me how relevant that was to me being a Friend.  My parents never heard the term radical hospitality, but that’s how they lived. I pray that in my life, leadings nurtured by discernment will bring me to the same level. To help me with discernment I’m reading When the Spirit Calls. More about it appears in this issue of Book Musings.
