In keeping with the principle that all days are holy, Quakers traditionally did not celebrate holidays. This belief was also a renouncement of much of the excess and materialism that occurred at major holiday celebrations.

Many meetings today observe holidays as a reason for remembrance, fellowship, celebration, and maintaining ties to family tradition. The experience will differ from family to family, and from meeting to meeting. When Friends do celebrate holidays, it is usually done as simply as possible. Decorations–if any–are minimal, and gifts are not extravagant.

Some celebrations occur at the meeting house, such as a shared meal, the singing of carols or hymns, or an extra sunrise meeting for worship.
