Event Description

Rashid Darden, a staff member at Friends General Conference, has published a novel called A Peculiar Legacy! It is the story of a Black community in Washington, DC, that is dealing with the loss of one of their own while maintaining their own unique worship traditions.

Friends have said of A Peculiar Legacy:

I have now read the book two times over…I loved it the first time and it is even better the second time!

This story examines identity, trauma, joy, and all kinds of relationships. I especially appreciate experiencing, through Darden’s storytelling, what Quaker faith and practice might look like when manifested and nurtured in a Black community in a major east coast city.

The community that Rashid Darden brings to life in A Peculiar Legacy — and the people he brings me to care deeply about — have stayed in my mind and heart ever since I read it. This is the sign of a wonderful book!

Purchase the novel at QuakerBooks and join host Betsy Bramon of Friends Meeting of Washington in conversation with Rashid about the origins, writing, and implications of this novel. Register at the link above and you will be sent a Zoom link prior to the event.

Spoiler Warning: We will be discussing key plot points, so please read the book before you attend. (Unless you enjoy spoilers!)
