The Institutional Assessment Implementation Committee (IAIC) provides support, leadership, and accountability for FGC’s efforts to become an actively anti-racist organization. Specifically, the committee works to implement the recommendations of FGC’s 2018 Institutional Assessment. Additionally, IAIC supports and encourages the anti-racism work of FGC-affiliated monthly and yearly meetings.

IAIC holds a unique role within FGC’s governance structure. The committee focuses on accountability, assessment, and institutional transparency. It collaborates with the Ministry on Racism by providing requested support and advising FGC staff on work that impacts racial justice.

What IAIC Does

IAIC carries out its work through several areas of focus:

Accountability and Assessment

  • Query Accountability: IAIC monitors how FGC committees and governance bodies apply the anti-racism query in their decision-making. The query asks: “How does this decision support FGC in its goal to transform into an actively anti-racist faith community?” The committee also encourages monthly and yearly meetings to adopt their own anti-racism goals and measure their progress.
  • Organizational Assessment: IAIC leads occasional FGC-wide assessments of progress in becoming an actively anti-racist organization. This work helps FGC understand where it has grown and where more work is needed.
  • Noticing and Documenting: Committee members notice and document occurrences of racial oppression and racial justice faithfulness at Central Committee and Executive Committee meetings.

Data and Transparency

  • Demographic Data: IAIC develops plans to systematically collect demographic data on FGC staff and volunteers. The committee also encourages monthly and yearly meetings to establish their own data collection systems and report annually to FGC.
  • Communications: IAIC communicates about its work and how FGC implements the Institutional Assessment recommendations. The committee also shares news from affiliated meetings regarding their anti-racist work.

Gathering Support

  • Supporting Gathering Committees: IAIC helps Gathering organizing committees apply the anti-racism query in their work.
  • Workshops and Events: Committee members facilitate racism-related Gathering workshops and participate in other Gathering events that address racism.

Staff Support

  • Advising Staff: IAIC advises FGC staff on aspects of their work that affect racial justice, upon request.
  • Hiring Participation: Committee members participate in search committees for hiring new FGC staff.

Working Groups

IAIC organizes its work through three working groups:

  • Communications Working Group: This group communicates about IAIC’s activities and FGC’s implementation of Assessment recommendations. It collaborates with staff on communications and institutional transparency. It also facilitates sharing news from affiliated meetings about their anti-racist work.
  • Demographic Data Working Group: This group develops plans for systematic demographic data collection. It encourages monthly and yearly meetings to maintain their own data collection systems.
  • Query Accountability Working Group: This group monitors committee compliance with the anti-racism query requirement. It also encourages affiliated meetings to adopt anti-racism goals and measure progress.

Relationship with the Ministry on Racism

IAIC and the Ministry on Racism collaborate to advance FGC’s anti-racism transformation. The Ministry on Racism serves as the strategic steward of FGC’s anti-racism commitment. IAIC complements this work by providing accountability structures and assessment tools related to the Institutional Assessment.

Specifically, IAIC:

  • Provides support as requested by the Ministry on Racism
  • Helps support alignment of governance accountability with the Ministry on Racism’s strategic direction
  • Shares information and resources that strengthen FGC’s anti-racism work

This collaborative relationship ensures that accountability and assessment connect with programming and strategic leadership. Together, IAIC and the Ministry on Racism help FGC live into its commitment to becoming an actively anti-racist faith community.
