Friends General Conference

Together we nurture the spiritual vitality of Friends
"Walk cheerfully over the world, answering that of God in everyone." -George Fox

Nashville Friends Meeting

Nashville Friends Meeting is a faith community called together to listen for and carry out what God/the Divine would have us do, individually and together. Grounded in the knowledge that there is "that of God" (also called the Light, the Seed, or the Christ) within every person, we seek to live in wholeness and to be faithful according to that Truth. Because of this, we strive to let our lives speak, demonstrating to each other and the world our testimonies of integrity, community, peace, equality, simplicity.

-Statement of purpose approved Fifth Day, Fifth Month, 2004.

We believe that we are all called to ministry. We do not have a pastor or paid clergy. We believe that gifts of the Spirit are given for the good of the community and strive to recognize, affirm, and encourage expression of those gifts in each of us, regardless of gender expression, racial or ethnic identity, sexual orientation, background, abilities, or history.

Meeting for Worship is held every Sunday at 10:30-11:30 except the third Sunday of each month (please arrive early, as latecomers are admitted at 10:40 only). On third Sundays our business sessions are integrated into worship, with open worship starting at 10 until a query is read at 10:40, worship centered on the query until 11, followed by worship with attention to business.

Guests are very welcome and we have informational brochures that you may pick up in the entry area if you wish, as our habit of silent worship is relatively different from that of most Christian denominations.

We have four age-groups of children receiving religious education during worship time. Your children are welcome to join us, and youth 12-18 can participate in regional retreats (see SAYF).

On the 2nd and 4th Sundays after worship, adult education topics are offered at 11:45 a.m. in a time we call 2nd Hour.

"There is a principle that is pure, placed in the human mind, which in different places and ages hath different names. It is, however, pure and proceeds from God. It is deep and inward, confined to no forms of religion nor excluded from any, where the heart stands in perfect sincerity." -John Woolman

What's New

Because a number of people who are central to conducting business will be out of town on the 3rd Sunday, Ministry and Counsel feels it best to reschedule meeting for business to the 4th Sunday. Meeting for Worship for the Conduct of Business will be held on Sunday, October 22nd. The schedule will be as usual with waiting (silent) worship beginning at 10:00 and Clerk Brian reading the query at 10:40. If you have questions, you're welcome to email nfmclerk(at)gmail(dot)com or the clerk of M&C, Mary Linda, at friendlymama(at)aol(dot)com.

Public
Friends Committee on National Legislation will be hosting an advocacy training workshop at the Meetinghouse on Monday, September 25 from 5:30-9pm (there will be a light vegetarian supper at 5:30, and the workshop will begin at 6pm).  See the attached documents for more information and please be sure to register so we can plan accordingly.

Ministry and Counsel has been in heavy discernment about Nashville Friends Meeting and where and how we are being called. We feel it is time to bring this work to our larger community. We would like to begin this by trying something new: A threshing session that will grow out of our next meeting for worship with attention to business on September 17th.
