Tree taken & lost (a poem by Carol)
They cut down the treeLast summer, orWas it yesterday? The hole in the skyIs still there. It took five menFive days to butcher itIt was so big.
A great elmIts limbs lifted overOne-hundred feetInto the sky likeA bouquet of roses.Oh, my heart achedTo hear the whineOf the awful saws.
One evening I stood andReached out my arms“I am so sorry, so sorry.”Just then a wave ofConnection rolledFrom the mutilated treeLike a benediction.“I’m alright; I’m alright.”
It has taken manyMonths of mourningTo begin to believeWhat it told me.
