Tree taken & lost (a poem by Carol)
They cut down the tree
Last summer, or
Was it yesterday?
The hole in the sky
Is still there.
It took five men
Five days to butcher it
It was so big.
A great elm
Its limbs lifted over
One-hundred feet
Into the sky like
A bouquet of roses.
Oh, my heart ached
To hear the whine
Of the awful saws.
One evening I stood and
Reached out my arms
“I am so sorry, so sorry.”
Just then a wave of
Connection rolled
From the mutilated tree
Like a benediction.
“I’m alright; I’m alright.”
It has taken many
Months of mourning
To begin to believe
What it told me.
