This activity helps Friends think about outreach. It invites reflection on people who might find a spiritual home in your meeting but have not found it yet. It also explores ways to connect those people with your meeting and the Quaker Way.
Plan for this activity to take 45–60 minutes.
Materials: paper, pens, and art supplies.
Divide into groups of four. Begin with a brief time of worship. Take a moment to think about a real or imagined person in your local community who is “Quaker, but doesn’t know it yet.”
Note for facilitators: Encourage groups to think broadly about diversity. Consider race and ethnicity, age, social class, sexual orientation, political views, disability, and other differences. Meetings are strengthened by many kinds of experience.
Discuss: What does it mean to be “Quaker, but not know it”? How might we recognize someone who could be a Maybe-Quaker?
What message would you like to share about the Quaker Way? What message would you like to share about your meeting?
How can this message reach Maybe-Quakers? Where in your community would it make the most sense to share it?
Discuss these questions as a group. Then work individually for 15 minutes. Create something that shares your message in a creative way. This could be a poster, poem, radio jingle, outreach event plan, billboard, press release, banner, social media plan, or artwork.
Share your creations with the wider group.
Conclude: We’ve heard many strong ideas. What do these ideas suggest about next steps for outreach in your meeting? Who is ready to help turn these ideas into an outreach plan?
