Challenging Racism

Are you a white Friend who wants to go deeper in your reflections on racism and white supremacy in a challenging yet compassionate virtual space? Join us for an 8-week virtual affinity group, “White Friends Receiving the Ministry of Friends of Color: The POC Pre-Gathering Epistle,” to engage with the queries posed in the Epistle.

This is an Affinity Space for People of European Descent to engage in, and labor with, the queries posed in the 2020 FGC People of Color Pre-Gathering Epistle. We will consider what message there is for us in the Epistle’s queries and to interrogate whiteness, racism and white supremacy in our midst. We intend to co-create a space for shared expertise and mutual learning, in order to build our capacity for addressing and disrupting systemic racism in the Religious Society of Friends.  Co-sponsored by the Ministry on Racism and the Spiritual Deepening Program.

Format: Zoom calls, including participants who need/prefer to call in.

Dates and Times: Wednesdays, September 16th through November 11th (skipping October 7th)

5-6:30 PM Pacific, 6-7:30 Mountain, 7-8:30 PM Central, 8-9:30 Eastern

Co-anchored by Liz Oppenheimer, Iowa Yearly Meeting Conservative, and Marijke van Roojen, Northern Yearly Meeting.

Liz Oppenheimer (she/Friend) has an anchor committee as she addresses her concern for whiteness and racism among Quakers. Friend Liz currently strives to undo the disproportionate praise she received from white adults for being independent by seeking partnerships in antiracism work.

As someone who identifies as white, Marijke van Roojen (she, hers) has been engaged in her own learning and unlearning. Marijke is interested in co-creating a supportive yet unsettling space together with others, for mutual accountability and to share and grow anti-racism practice among white Friends.

Size is limited to 16 participants who can commit to the full 8 weeks. The facilitators are seeking representation across the United States and Canada, and to engage together with folx who are already considering their own role and purpose in terms of racial justice activism.
