News & Announcements
The Subcommittee of Peace and Social Action Formed to Study Inequality announced the introduction of a new blog entitled "The Quaker Activist: Reducing the Gap Between Rich and Poor." Readers are invited to comment on the postings. More importantly, all members and attenders of SMFM are invited to submit their own material for posting; all submissions will be given serious consideration by the editorial board, which consists of the subcommittee members. New postings on the blog will be made weekly.
This coming week (February 25th) the Meeting for Healing will be postponed due to members’ illness. We will reconvene March 4 and 18 (1st and 3rd Wednesday in March) due to my travel schedule, and then resume on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday in April.
Julie Harlow visited Santa Monica Quaker Meeting last Sunday July 27 where she gave a slide presentation and led a discussion about Friends House Moscow, the political situation in Russia and the Quaker response. She also sold some Russian crafts to raise money for Friends House Moscow, a small international Quaker non-profit operating in Russia since 1996. She has traveled in the USSR and Russia since 1984, is one of the founders of Friends House Moscow and is still active on its international board.
An article I wrote on mystical experience was published in the last issue of Friends Journal. They have a new feature on their website. Authors are asked to read their articles and the recordings are posted alongside a copy of the article on the website. They also allow people to post comments about the articles.
In Quakerism, our annual conference is called our "Yearly Meeting." Ours just ended. It was in Mendocino, CA and we had record numbers of people from our local Santa Monica meeting attend this year. Many exciting things happened and we will be posting reports on all that soon.
