FGC is pleased to announce this year’s Quaker Voluntary Service (QVS) Volunteer, Sonali Kumar. She will support the efforts of FGC’s Ministry on Racism for the duration of one year. Sonali is the second QVS Volunteer to be placed with FGC since the organization opened its Philadelphia house in 2013.

Originally from San Diego, California, Sonali attended Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. Her experiences at Smith influenced her decision to pursue her calling to serve the Quaker community.

“I loved the idea of communal living, social justice work inspired by faith, and simplicity,” she said. “I also liked what I had seen of Quakerism in the Northampton meetings I had attended.”

As a QVS Volunteer, Sonali will work with FGC’s Ministry on Racism Program and serve on the Diversity Committee. She will attend the 2015 White Privilege Conference (WPC), the Facing Race Conference, and the Friends of Color Retreat. She will also help plan WPC 2016 and reach out to Yearly Meetings in North America with regards to the Ministry on Racism.

During her year-long service, Sonali will live in QVS’s Philadelphia service house with seven other volunteers under the spiritual care of Green Street Monthly Meeting and Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting. Sonali’s placement with FGC is possible thanks to a generous grant from the Shoemaker Foundation.

FGC extends a very warm welcome to Sonali and the rest of the QVS Volunteers in Philadelphia!
