Workshop Description

Five 2-hour sessions: Monday 2/3 – Friday 2/7 (3-5pm Eastern / 12-2pm Pacific)

This workshop will highlight the joy in the lives of BIPOC people as represented in movies other than those films that exploit and stereotype the experience of people of color. Those films present a very narrow understanding of a full life well lived. We expect participants to leave with an expanded knowledge of the lives of people of color and an appreciation of the various joyful cultures these lives are lived within. The format will be to watch a film before the session and be ready to explore and discuss the joy(s) represented and process our observations of learned stereotypes of the white gaze. We will reserve a period of Worship at the beginning and end of each day.

Participants will be expected to watch a film before each day’s discussion. Individuals can choose to watch the film on their own or collectively on Zoom the night before at agreed upon time. Thus there will not be reading but watching assignments for each day.

Leader Experience

Carolyn has facilitated and co-facilitated numerous FGC workshops. Lee Andrew assisted during the 2020 Hey White People Lets Watch Movies workshop and officially co-facilitated the 2021 workshop as well. Lee Andrew and Carolyn have facilitated numerous workshops in secular settings. Our friendship includes much love of films and multiple discussions over good food.
