On Tuesday night at the 2023 Gathering, most adult Friends will participate in Interest Groups,  small-group sessions that often spark new leadings and insights. Past topics have included  peace and justice issues, emerging concerns, education, economics, spirituality, and other matters of interest to Friends. Interest Groups will take place at Western Oregon University from 7 – 8:45 pm on Tuesday evening, July 4, 2023

Interest Group Proposals

Any registered Gathering participant can propose to lead an Interest Group. Interest group proposals are now closed.

We will consider each proposal with care, and you will be notified by May 31st.

There is a limit to the number of interest groups that can be offered and we may not be able to schedule all requests. Here is our definition of Interest Groups.

  • Interest Groups have a specific focus.
  • They are not “mini workshops” – ambitious agendas and elaborate presentations are not realistic.
  • Interest Groups do not duplicate other exhibit or performance opportunities such as the Art Gallery, or local trips.
  • We expect them to have an obvious connection to concerns of Friends generally and Gathering attenders specifically.

This proposal process is for interest groups scheduled for Tuesday evening July 4, from 7 pm to 8:45 pm. If that time doesn’t work for you, the “afternoon activities” time throughout the week also offers opportunities to bring together Friends with shared interests. Any Gathering participant can ask to schedule a room and time at the Information Desk after you arrive at the Gathering, and then publicize your event in the Daily Bulletin.

Interest Group Proposal FAQ

Do Interest Group Leaders Have to Register?
Yes. Interest Group must register for the full Gathering week, first half Gathering, or as part time attenders. Learn more about Gathering registration.

Photocopies (no) and AV equipment (yes)
In keeping with a concern to reduce the complexity of the Gathering, and also to control costs, the Gathering office will not be able to reproduce printed materials. However, we might be able to provide digital projectors. If so, you would need to attend a training session to learn how to use the college’s projectors.  We are not able to provide other AV equipment (you may bring your own).

Will interest groups be hybrid?
No, all Interest Groups will be fully in person. While we recognize that online programming expands access, we do not have the staff or volunteer support to successfully offer hybrid interest groups.
