Accessibility

The Access Resources team is eager to hear from Friends about specific needs which must be met to enable their attendance and full participation in the Gathering. We will do all that we can to meet these needs. For example, golf cart shuttles are available for Friends with mobility limitations. When registering, please check all “Accessibility Needs” that apply, adding appropriate details. You may also contact the Gathering Office with questions, or the Access Needs Coordinators.

Accessibility at the University of Toledo at the 2018 Gathering

The Main Campus of the University of Toledo is urban and compact with some hills on the south side of the campus. The University of Toledo campus has three main areas we will utilize with varied terrain. The area between the Field House classroom building and Student Union is level with mild sloping. The dorms are at the top of a hill and the Recreation Center is at the third point of a triangle. The classroom building, Rec Center, Student Union and dorms are accessible and have elevators.

The Student Union: This is a large building with automatic doors; one can move between floors via elevator, ramp or stairwell. There are accessible bathrooms on all floors, gender neutral bathrooms, and wide hallways for crowds to move with relative ease. While accessible, the layout of the student union is not intuitive so please be prepared to reference signs accordingly.

In the area between the student union and the Main Field House are picnic tables, a fountain, bike racks, and some green space.

The Main Field House: The Main Field House is one of the newest renovations on campus and is LEED certified. It has a central elevator, automatic doors, and bathrooms that are paper-towel free. There are accessible bathrooms on every floor; the classrooms in the building vary in size and furniture. Some classrooms have long tables and free-standing chairs while others have desk-chair combinations easily movable on wheels but not friendly to non-normative bodies. Some classrooms have carpet and others are tiled. Some classrooms use fluorescent lighting and have no windows (they are tornado safe zones) and others have more access to natural light.

Dorm and Living Accommodations: There are some accessible dorm rooms, and all the dorms we're using have elevators. The main dorms we are using have suite-style rooms with single-occupancy bathrooms and showers. There are no refrigerators on campus. Please mark on your registration if you require refrigerator access for medical needs. The Gathering is ready to provide assistance with mobility needs, hearing needs, special diets, and more.

Other forms of accessibility

  • Financial Accessibility - FGC wants Friends of all financial means to attend the Gathering.
  • Groups- Many groups at the Gathering offer a unique opportunity for Friends with similar interests to have their own program in the afternoons or late evenings. Find out how you can schedule an event.
  • Fragrance Sensitivities  - The Gathering includes people with asthma and chemical sensitivities which are triggered by fragrances. Help these Friends stay healthy by doing your best to bring fragrance-free toiletries (or buy them at the Gathering Store). If you have fragrance senstivities or allergies, read about steps taken to limit air-borne allergens and fragrances at the Gathering.
  • Airport Transportation - inlcuding transportation for motorized scooters and anyone who needs a ramp or lift to get into a vehicle.
