York Friends Meeting is the oldest house of worship in the city that is still in use.  There are a few older congregations, but they have all built newer buildings.  This is both a blessing and a challenge, as many people driving by on Philadelphia Street think this building is just an old historic building, built in 1766, with a new addition in 1783. Currently the meeting is alive and growing to the point we feel the need for an addition to our building.

In November, 2016, members of Conejohela Chapter 28, Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology, excavated the old outhouse, currently used for storage, and found historic artifacts, mainly glass and ceramic, that appear to have been in the privy since about 1825! The wide range of patterns and quantities of fragments of each, along with how the  artifacts  could be associated with the Meeting House, is intriguing!  They will be consulting local archeological experts for assessment--check back for more details.  Meanwhile, enjoy the slide show of their finds.
