WHAT TO EXPECT ON ARRIVAL FOR MEETING FOR WORSHIP

If you are arriving for meeting for worship at 11:00 am on Sunday, you will find literature about Quaker worship in the entrance hallway.  Please take what you would like into the meeting room.  Greeters will welcome you at the entrance to the meeting room; feel free to ask them any questions that you have.  Enter the meeting room in silence and try to center down in worship.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING MEETING FOR WORSHIP

We meet together in expectant silence with the hope of experiencing the Divine Presence/Spirit.  Messages from a deep place may arise out of the silence.  Anyone may receive a message from the Spirit and speak it into the silence.  Messages are not prepared in advance.  If one is unclear about sharing a message, it is probably best to wait with it.  A period of silence follows each message so that listeners can absorb it.  We do not respond to an earlier message in affirmation, conversation or rebuttal.  A meeting may have shared messages or may be silent.   Deep worship may occur whether or not there are shared messages.

WHY WE USE A MICROPHONE DURING MEETING FOR WORSHIP

We use a microphone when speaking in Meeting for Worship so that everyone will be able to hear spoken messages.  When you rise to speak, wait until the microphone is delivered to you. If you need extra help with hearing other people's messages, there are headsets just outside the entrance to the Meeting Room.

HOW LONG DOES MEETING FOR WORSHIP LAST AND HOW DOES IT END

Worship lasts about an hour.  When it is time to end, an assigned person shakes hands with a neighbor.  Others then shake hands with the people around them.  Next we go around the room introducing ourselves.  When you introduce yourself, please let us know that you are new and tell us a little about yourself.  Announcements pertaining to the life of the meeting follow introductions.  After that we move into the Social Room for refreshments and conversation.

HOW PEOPLE DRESS

Dress as you are comfortable.  You will find that dress ranges from business casual to blue jeans.

ADULT EDUCATION/SHARING (9:30 HOUR)

On the first, third, fourth (and fifth if there is one) Sundays there is a chance for sharing/adult education at 9:30 am.  Usually we use this time to share with each other on a particular topic regarding various aspects of our spiritual life.  Attending 9:30 Hour is a good way to start getting to know others in the meeting.  You are welcome to come listen, even if you are not comfortable sharing as a newcomer.  On occasion there is a speaker a the 9:30 Hour, usually with some opportunity for some sharing on the topic.  You can see the 9:30 Hour topics in the Calendar on the Home page.

POTLUCK LUNCH

On the fourth Sunday we have a potluck lunch after Meeting for Worship.  Staying for potluck is a good way to get to know people in the meeting.  Even if you have not brought a dish to share, we encourage you to stay.  There is always enough food for everyone.

MEETING FOR BUSINESS

Meeting for Business is held on the second Sunday of every month at 9:00 am.  We conduct business in the spirit of worship.  We use collective discernment to understand God's will for us.  There is no voting.  No matter how new you are to the meeting, you are welcome to come the Meeting for Business.  Attending these meetings will help you learn more about our meeting.
