Adult Religious Education: What do Quakers believe? What do you believe?

Public ContentAnyone can view this post

If a visitor asked you, “What do members of this Quaker Meeting believe?” would you be able to answer, confident that what you say would represent the views of the majority of the members of the Meeting? If, asked simply, “What do YOU believe?” how would you answer?

This Adult Religious Ed session invites participants to share their spiritual beliefs with one another in a worship-sharing format. Do you believe in God, and if so, what is your definition of “God”? Do you consider yourself, or Quakers, to be Christian? What is the role if any of Jesus in your beliefs? Or Buddha, or other spiritual traditions?  What does the phrase “Christ has come to teach his people” mean to you? Do you believe in heaven, hell or reincarnation? These are only a few of the questions we might explore in sharing our beliefs with one another.

In preparation for this session, participants are asked to view the video “9 Core Quaker Beliefs” on This short video is an interview with Arthur Larrabee, former PYM General Secretary, who describes what he feels are the core beliefs of unprogrammed Friends. Are your beliefs consistent with his nine ideas? Would you modify the list, add or subtract to it, or expand his explanations?

In addition to learning more about what we individually believe, hopefully this session will let us see what beliefs we hold in common that may represent the core beliefs of the Monthly Meeting of Friends of Philadelphia.
