Herndon Friends Meeting

January 2022   NOTE: Due to the surge in COVID, we are temporarily meeting on Zoom only.

Ordinarily, we are using a hybrid format for Meeting for Worship, with in-person and Zoom options. Fully vaccinated people ages 5 and up  (meaning vaccinated and boosted if enough time has passed and in a CDC approved age range to be eligible for a booster) and unvaccinated children under age 5 are welcome to join in person, wearing masks.

The children join the adults during the first 15 minutes of Meeting for Worship then go out with their teachers (or babysitter, for babies) for the next 45 minutes. Parents are not expected to help with teaching, unless they want to. See this page for details.

Meeting for Worship is from 10:30 to 11:30 am on Sundays.

Meeting for Business is usually held from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on the second Sunday of each month.  Consult the calendar for exact dates.

On the third Sunday of each month, there will usually be a First Hour Discussion at 9:00 a.m., in person and via the same Zoom session.

You can join by computer, cell phone, or land line.  Please try to join 10 to 15 minutes before each session, so that we will not need to start over with introductions and orientation.

For questons or information on how to join the Zoom meetings, please contact the Clerk, Meg Wallace, by filling out this form. https://forms.gle/3qdrB6qJA3MeLpka9

Herndon Friends Meeting (Quakers) is a worshiping community of seekers and invites everyone to join us.  We believe that the spirit of God, also called the Inner Light, the Inner Christ, or Spirit, is within each person.  This core belief drives our commitment to equality, simplicity, peace, integrity, community, and stewardship.

Our weekly service (the Meeting for Worship) consists of gathering in silent worship in the presence of God, with a sense of prayerful expectation.

Quakerism grew out of the Christian tradition in England in the mid-1600s.  The Bible is one source of inspiration, but new insights and understandings can come to each of us, without an intermediary such as a paid minister.

We are all ministers in that we have the obligation to speak to the Truth that we know.  Sometimes we are led to share these new understandings out of the silence in the Meeting for Worship. We believe that every person is loved by the Divine Spirit.  Our community welcomes and affirms attenders of all ages, religious backgrounds, races, education, classes, sexual orientation, and gender identity (LGBTQ+).

Audio assistance is available via headsets and a loop system. The Meetinghouse is handicapped accessible.

What to expect when you visit for the first time......

At our Meeting for Business on Sunday, October 13, Herndon Friends agreed to adopt the practice suggested by the BYM Growing Diverse Leadership Committee, to test decisions we make using the following queries:

1.   How could this decision affect those who have been harmed by racist behavior?

2.   To what degree have privilege, class, stereotypes, assumptions, and our ability to include other perspectives affected this decision? Will this decision promote equity, diversity, and inclusiveness? Will it enable us to be more friendly and whole?
