Transition Towns - a talk with Ruah Swennerfelt

Join friends to talk with Ruah Swennerfelt about her book Rising to the Challenge, The Transition Movement and People of Faith on Wednesday, May 31st at 7:00 p.m. at the Dover Meetinghouse.  Potluck dinner begins at 6:00 p.m.

RUAH SWENNERFELT is spreading good news about an exciting new worldwide movement called Transition Towns and will be chronicling her efforts to help that movement grow. The Transition Town Movement is about transitioning to a world that is less vulnerable to climate change and less dependent on fossil fuels. It invites people from all walks of life and political persuasions to come together to create vibrant, resilient communities.

Ruah's talk will resonate with anyone, whether faith-based or not, who is searching for ways to engage meaningfully in life-affirming grassroots work, and who is needing a reason for hope.

The Transition Town model of inclusiveness and optimism is our best hope, Ruah believes, because "if we wait for governments to act it will be too late; if we act as individuals it will be too little; but if we work together in our communities it might be just enough, just in time. "

Ruah, a member of Burlington Friends Meeting, is an activist, homesteader, blogger, and author of the book, Rising to the Challenge: The Transition Movement and People of Faith. She retired in 2010 as General Secretary of Quaker Earthcare Witness and currently serves on the boards of Vermont Interfaith Power & Light and Transition Town Charlotte, Vermont. She is active with Transition US and is currently helping to plan for the first Transition US national conference in July 2017. She is also involved with the New England Resilience & Transition Network. Ruah received a grant from the NEYM Legacy Fund to help with travel to share this good news.

"Rising to the Challenge is a beautiful book about a beautiful movement. Almost by definition, hoping we can effect a transition is a statement of faith—which means that those of us in communities of faith should be emboldened to support this great work with everything we’ve got."
