Minutes Details:

It is the recommendation of Ministry and Counsel that two books be set up to record the death of Friends and attenders of Meeting. The books would contain the Memorial Minute and the place of burial for each death recorded. A special notation would be made of the ashes placed in the meeting property. One of the books would be readily available in the Meeting House and the other placed in a fire proof area of safekeeping.

Further, it is recommended that we not pursue the subject of a Burial Plaque at this time. In part, this is in recognition of the fact that a plaque is not going to represent those members who lived out their lives with the Meeting. Growing from our discussion of this subject has been the realization that a serious void exists in the Meeting in regards to death education and the assistance we are capable of providing our members at the time of dying.

Therefore, it is further recommended that Summit Meeting establish a Burial Committee to research the subject of death, address specific and broad aspects of dying and prepare itself to assist members and attenders of Meeting at the time of a death in the family.

Specifically, it is recommended that a committee of four members be established under the care of Ministry and Counsel with one of the members to be appointed by Overseers as their representative.

The Minute was presented to Monthly Meeting and accepted with the request that the Burial Committee devise a more appropriate name. The committee members will not be appointed to limited terms but will serve indefinite terms as is done on the Committee of Assistance for continuity.
