Fair Trade Events in December

Two events over the first weekend of December aim to bring about equality in the world.

The first, on December 1, is about the Food System.  Do you know which Fair Trade products can be found even at Seven Eleven or CVS?  Honest Tea and Ben & Jerry's ice cream. That's great, right? But how do you feel if you learn that Honest Tea is owned by Coca Cola Company which has a long history of acquisitions such as Minute Maid, Fuze among others and B. & J. is owned by Unilever, the world's largest consumer goods company, which also owns Dove, Hellman's Knorr, Lipton, etc.

Dec. 1: Let's Take Back Our Food System, 6:00-8:00, Rufus Jones Room

Join the Equal Exchange Action Forum and Fair Trade Philadelphia for an evening, discussion about who controls our food system, and how we can mobilize ourselves to create a more just, sustainable, and democratic, food system that works for farmers, workers, and consumers. Equal Exchange launched the Action Forum at the beginning of 2017 to deepen engagement with citizen-consumers to analyze and challenge our food system. Come out to learn how you can be an integral part to building this community. Food will be provided.

It is free, but we need to count the number of attendees to prepare the right amount of food. If you are planning to come, let me know.

Dec. 3: Giving Back to Amazon Communities, 12:00-3:00 in the Cherry Street Room

There will be a sale of Fair Trade handmade crafts by people of Peruvian Amazon communities, including unique gifts such as woven belts, bags, baskets, guitar straps, hot pads, hat bands, bottle carriers, dog collars, maracas, jewelry as well as Christmas tree ornaments. The sale is essential for the sustainable livelihoods of these artisan families.

I hope you will be able to come and bring your friends!

12:45 – 1:30 pm in the Lucretia Mott Room
Presentation by Campbell Plowden (member of State College Friends Meeting), Founder and Executive Director of the Center for Amazon Community Ecology (CACE).

He has worked for tropical forest peoples and conservation for over 30 years.
