Alaska Friends Conference 2014 Annual Gathering:  July 31 - August 3, 2014, Dickerson Friends Center

At our 2013 gathering, Friends expressed a growing concern for earthcare generally and climate disruption specifically.  Our Yearly Meeting minuted our concerns about the effects of climate disruption, particularly in Alaska, and the need to address human-triggered climate change as a spiritual concern.  We endorsed the Kabarak Statement on Eco-Justice and drafted a letter requesting non-partisan discussion of climate disruption in the US Senate.

We recognize last year's minutes of concern as the beginning and not the end of our our leading to witness.   We feel called to continue this work, uplifted and informed by our worship.  So the 2014 gathering will build on the foundation of concern and ask how Alaskan Friends may be called to carry the work of earthcare and sustainable community forward, in our own families, in our Meetings, and in Alaska.  We believe that dealing with climate disruption may be this generation of Friends’ contribution to the continuing revelation of how we must live.

Our 2014 gathering will be enriched by the presence of two gifted Friends: Michael Wajda, Associate Secretary for Development, Friends General Conference and Shelley Tanenbaum, General Secretary of Quaker Earthcare Witness.  They will work with us so that we can discern and  confidently answer what we as Alaska Friends are called to do as our part of this great beckoning transformation.

We will meet the first weekend of August at Dickerson Friends Center in Wasilla.  With an earlier date than in recent years, our schedule will restore Thursday evening opening meal and informal session, then a full schedule of activities Friday morning through Sunday noon.

For those of you that missed the 2013 gathering, we enjoyed improvements to the cabin and cooking area, and the new dock provides opportunities for both swimming and boating.
