Together we nurture the spiritual vitality of Friends
Memphis Friends Meeting - Visitors Are Welcome

News & Announcements

The query offered at business meeting and meeting for worship on 9/10 was how we nourish our friendships so that they deepen over time.

At business meeting, plans were shared for thanksgiving baskets this year. New Tyler AME has arranged to receive turkeys and hams for the 100 or so friends who frequent the church's food pantry. On behalf of the meeting, Robin has committed for our meeting to gather food basket items for 20 food baskets to complement the meat items. Here is a shopping list of the requested basket items:

At the 8/14 meeting for business and meeting for worship, the clerk read excerpts of news coverage about Courtney Ross's death in police custody. Then he read a passage from Matthew:

[37] Then the righteous will answer him, `Lord, when did we see thee hungry and feed thee, or thirsty and give thee drink?

[38] And when did we see thee a stranger and welcome thee, or naked and clothe thee?

[39] And when did we see thee sick or in prison and visit thee?

Recently our online worshippers have noted a deterioration in the audibility of messages from in-person Friends. At the 8/6 worship a borrowed microphone seemed to improve sound, and the Communications Committee is in search for good tech solutions. Please let Carol or another member of the communications committee (Kali, Blake, or Mallory) know if you have suggestions to offer. Memphis Friends are becoming acquainted with https://www.workaway.info/ in anticipation of the month-long stay in Memphis of a young Japanese traveler/musician who is currently living and working on the farm of some Alabama Quakers. Those interested in helping organize hospitality should contact Susan.

Ethel “Doris” Connor, 68, died at home Thursday, June 22, 2023. The last few days of her life were mostly spent sleeping and listening to friends who came to say goodbye. She died a few minutes after some of her deepest friends spoke to her about her beloved children, grandchildren, and her part of the Quaker community that cared so much for her. She made us better people.

Karen and Mike Minnis joined Memphis Friends for the meeting for learning on 4/23. The couple have founded and operate a suite of businesses in Orange Mound that focus on nutrition, health, community building and job training. Volunteers are welcome. Many Friends expressed interest in a tour of the gardens to learn more and to identify ways to volunteer:
