Spiritual State of The Meeting 2016
Miami Friends Meeting
Prologue
2016 was an active year in the spiritual life of this Meeting. We offer this report as a reflective document
that seeks to state where we are at the present from a spiritual perspective. This reflection will include
instances where we feel that we have done our best to further the creation of a Beloved community, and it
will also highlight areas where we think we can do better in achieving the same.
At the Meeting for Business of January 8, 2017, the Miami MM of Friends approved a minute: “Miami Friends Meeting wishes to declare itself welcoming to immigrants beginning with a commitment to education of each other and the community.” At that time, we created an ad hoc committee to implement the minute. The committee includes Kathy Hersh, Rusty Levenson, Josh Paolino, April Merleaux, Holly Iglesias, Tere Campos, Jeannette Smith, and Jane Westberg.

The current political move to defund Planned Parenthood would be disastrous. The Dakota Access pipeline, which is being built by the Dallas-based company Energy Transfer Partners, endangers culturally significant land and also puts the Missouri River in danger of pollution. We, the Miami Friends Meeting (SEYM), are called to support the voices and actions of the Standing Rock Sioux and the more than 150 Tribal Nations at Sacred Stones Camp in North Dakota and others who have joined them in peaceful protest and protection of the water of the Missouri River.
