Invitation to apply to join the Delegation of Young People attending the Nobel Peace Summit in Rome

The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) has been invited to send 8 young people (ages 18-23) to participate in this year’s Nobel Peace Summit in Rome, December 13-15, 2007. The meeting’s theme this year is The Next Generation of Peacemakers. There will be sessions with the Nobel laureates and interactive sessions with students in Colleges and Universities in Rome. This year’s Summit will likely include the participation of the Dalai Lama, Mohammed Younis (Grameen Bank), President Gorbachev, Betty Williams, Mairead Maguire and Shirin Ebadi and others. The Organizations who have received the Nobel Peace Prize will also be represented.

AFSC is fortunate to have resources from a donor to pay the expenses for the 8 young people attending (except for shopping or other incidentals).

As a result of time constraints, AFSC is not requiring an application, but is asking for the following:

* A letter of application (no more than 2 pages) about candidate’s own personal work for peace, contact with or experience of AFSC, and what the candidate hopes to gain from participation in such a delegation.
* A cv/resume (including contact information—address, phone and e-mail address), age, Meeting membership if applicable, and other details the candidate wishes to share with the committee.
* A letter of reference/support from someone who knows the candidate well.

Candidates should be aged 18-23, be either a member of the Religious Society of Friends or in some way connected to the work of the AFSC, be available on their return to commit to speaking engagements on behalf of AFSC, and have a current passport.

The committee hopes to select a diverse group with a variety of experiences and backgrounds.

Applications (electronic or regular mail) must be received no later than October 25, 2007

These materials should be sent to:
