II. IDEAS FOR TEACHING QUAKER HISTORY IN FIRST DAY SCHOOL

KEY: Asterisks indicate the appropriate age levels for each section:
* A single asterisk indicates that the idea is especially appropriate for children.
** A double asterisk indicates it is appropriate for both children and teenagers.
*** A triple asterisk indicates that the idea is best suited for teenagers.
**** Four asterisks indicate it is ideal for all-ages.

* GEORGE AND MARGARET PUPPET SHOW: What was life really like for George Fox and Margaret Fell? Let the puppets do the talking!

*** GEORGE FOX TIME-LINE: Draw a line across a long piece of paper. Above the line, put events in the life of George Fox. Below the line, put historic events.

** HISTORIC QUAKERS TALKING: Read about the lives of various Quakers throughout history. Have each youth choose one historical Quaker and dress in the clothing that he or she would have worn. Based on what they have learned, have your class discuss current events with each other. Each member of your class would speak about current events from the point of view and the experiences of the Quaker whom he or she represents.

** HISTORICAL QUAKERS DRAMATIZED: Each First Day class chooses a historical Quaker and prepares a skit, complete with costumes, about that Quaker. Each class performs their skit for children and adults at rise of meeting. Friends in meeting guess who the historical Quaker is.

** INTERVIEW ELDERLY MEMBERS OF MEETING: Have children make a list of questions they would like to hear elderly Friends talk about. Have children conduct and tape record the interviews.

*** QUAKER QUIZ: Have the teenagers write a quiz, based on the Quaker history and traditions they studied during the year. Distribute the quiz to members of the meeting to take. After taking the quiz, the teenagers go over the answers. (Kathy Devecka)
