Jerry Frost's Centennial Lecture
"Three
Twentieth-Century Revolutions"
J. William Frost gave the FGC Centennial address on July 2, 2000 at the Annual Gathering of Friends in Rochester, N.Y. A member of Swarthmore Friends Meeting, Jerry Frost is the Jenkins Professor of Quaker History and Research at Swarthmore College, and Director of the Friends Historical Library. His address was excerpted from a longer paper, reprinted here in full.
Centennial Events
In addition to the Sunday night plenary and the all-Gathering photo, a variety of Centennial events throughout the week gave a special flavor to this year's Gathering. Morning workshops offered by Mary Ellen Chijioke, Chuck Fager, Marty Walton and Nancy Webster addressed a wide range of topics in Quaker and FGC history. The extended afternoon history tours organized by Chris Densmore were enormously popular, as were shorter field trips to historic sites offered by Rich Regen of the local arrangements committee. Afternoon teas were held to celebrate "Memories of Cape May", and to express appreciation to those who have served FGC in the past. During the lunch hour "Quaker Theater" offered historical entertainments, including the FGC history pageant, a video on the history of Alexandria (VA) Friends Meeting, a performance by John Sheldon's workshop of selections from the George Fox cantata, "The Fire and the Hammer", and an enthusiastically received presentation by a local Rochester troupe of a "living history" drama entitled "Meet Rochester's Abolitionists." Afternoon panels included a discussion of the future of Quakerism, led by Bruce Birchard, and a presentation on Quaker history by the four workshop leaders. On Friday afternoon we held a procession celebrating our past, present, and future as Quakers, ending with a huge circle of Friends, gathered in worship. For questions on any of these events, please contact Deborah Haines (contact information below).
Documenting the Present
During the next year we will be trying to put together a plan for documenting ongoing and future activities of FGC. Let us know if you have ideas or would like to help with: records management; photo, video and audio records; or electronic communications.
