Live Oak Friends Meeting House
Quakers made the news with an article and pictures in the New York Times about the beautiful new Live Oak Friends Meeting House in Houston, Texas. You can see it on the NYT website at http://www.nytimes.com/2001/01/11/living/11JIM.html. Designed by Quaker artist James Turrell and built with support from Houston Friends, art patrons, and FGC's Friends Meeting House Fund, the building is a work of art. Members of FGC's Executive Committee had a special opportunity to experience this very unusual building-and the very friendly and caring meeting members-during our winter sessions. We began our committee meeting during the sunset on Friday evening with the roof open to the clear sky. We were pleased and honored to join Live Oak Friends Meeting in their inaugural First Day worship in this extraordinary new space on Second Month 4th, 2001. Many members of Executive Committee were deeply moved by this architectural celebration of physical and spiritual light and the window to the heavens above. |
