Meeting for Bicycling
Grinnell is a small town on the edge (if not the middle) of nowhere, surrounded by farmland with quiet roads. As we explore the countryside on our bicycles, we will probably find God if she is to be found anywhere. We certainly will find rides from ten to thirty miles, as your condition permits.
Meeting for Bicycling is moving meditation; an attempt to find God whilst experiencing a heartrate of over 100. He's out there -- we know that. But sometimes Her still small voice is hard to hear over the intellectual hubbub running through our brains. Meeting for Bicycling is an attempt to strip off the inner conversation that keeps us from hearing God.
We'll ride anywhere from ten to thirty miles, or possibly more depending on the condition of the riders and roads. You should be prepared to ride at least ten miles in two hours. Your bicycle should be in good condition: chain oiled, tires pumped, brakes adjusted. Bring it to a bike shop and tell them that you're going to ride a hundred miles. You should eat a good breakfast every day. You'll probably burn 1000 calories on the ride.
We will split up into groups going long, short, and medium distances. This workshop is open to all and doesn't fill up. That means that we will need at least two volunteers every day to step up and be responsible for keeping the group together. And I don't want the same people volunteering every day. That means YOU should come emotionally prepared to act as the herd dog of the group, even if somebody else volunteers before you do.
You should bring a helmet. Relative to brain surgery, a helmet is cheap. It won't protect you from everything, but it will protect you from enough to justify the expense. And I don't want you in my workshop unless you have sufficient respect for the integrity of your brain to wear a helmet. Capiche?
We will find a quiet place away from campus in the middle of the ride for worship. This is good.
