Johnstown Area Field Trips

Founded in 1800, Johnstown became a thriving industrial community when its mills produced millions of tons of steel.

Mass immigration from Europe, beginning in 1870, provided the labor force that allowed Johnstown to become the largest steel-making center in the United States. Today, a resource-based tourism economy stresses the region’s industrial past, its immigrant heritage, and its gorgeous natural surroundings.

Probable field trips during the Gathering include:

  • Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob, widely acclaimed works by Frank Lloyd Wright
  • Mount Assisi Monastery Sunken Gardens
  • Old Bedford Village, a living history of 18th and 19th century Pennsylvania
