It is interesting to watch the videos posted on this site. I am a member of the Religious Society of Friends and I am African American. I have not attended Meeting for Worship in about 4 years. I miss Meeting dearly – I miss the deep silence and meditation, however I find it difficult to attend Meeting in my local area. I grew tired of messages that were laced with privilege and self-righteousness – the white way is the standard which all else is to be measured. This type of tenor was not healthy for my state of being, so I stopped attending because the sense of the Meeting, for me, was no longer refreshing and spiritual uplifting. Maybe this is the culture of my local Meeting and, maybe, I should seek out Meetings in other locations. I don’t know the answer, but I am concerned about the effects I see of not having worship in my life.
I hope this book has an impact on FGC and begins a dialog amongst Friends. But for the dialog to begin, Friends need to acknowledge that there is a problem/concern.
"The answer for Friends is to deepen and broaden our sense of the presence of God as we have seen Him in Christ, until we are fully aware that love of God and love of men cannot be separated. In the measure that we become unsegregated from within, we shall desegregate outwardly."
Errol Elliott, lecture to Indiana Yearly Meeting, 1968.
