African American Quaker Profiles

Get acquainted with the lives of African American Quakers from the colonial period to the present. New biographies will be added every month. We offer these in the spirit of the book Black Quakers: Brief Biographies (Chicago: Progressiv Publishr, 1986) by Kenneth Ives (1917-2002).

Though available at some monthly meetings and Friends historical libraries, Black Quakers (which originaly utilized Progressively English simplified spelling) has long been out of print. We offer these biographies in a printer-friendly format to encourage Friends to incorporate them into First Day school lessons and other study and self-education.
