Miyo Moriuchi of Warrington Monthly Meeting, Baltimore Yearly Meeting arranged a special event on October 5, 2003 at the Gitt Memorial Library in Hanover, PA. Vanessa Julye and Donna McDaniel were on a writing retreat, staying at the library and working on their book Fit for Freedom, Not for Friendship. Miyo arranged a potluck and discussion for her meeting allowing Donna and Vanessa to share some of their work on the history of relationships between Quakers and African Americans. The day was fair, the food was fine and the discussion was vibrant.
Fit for Freedom, Not for Friendship is a large undertaking both for Vanessa and Donna and for Quaker Press of FGC. We anticipate that the first draft will be completed by this summer and the book will likely make its debut at the 2005 Gathering in Virginia. They are looking for information about what individual Friends and monthly meetings, including FUM and EFI Friends, were doing related to racial justice (fair housing, employment, establishing personal connections, and so on) during the 20th century, specifically in the Civil Rights era (the 50s, 60s, and 70s) If you have information to share or contacts to suggest, please e-mail barbarah@fgcquaker.org who will pass on your messages. Your assistance will be much appreciated.
