Publishing with Friends

By Margaret Hope Bacon
Friends General Conference has republished two of my books after the initial publisher relinquished copyright: Mothers of Feminism, orginally published by Harper & Row in 1986 and republished by FGC in 1995; and in 1999 Valiant Friend: The Life of Lucretia Mott, orginally published by Walker & Company in 1980. In both cases I was given ample opportunity to make a number of changes in the original text, correcting errors and amplifying documentation. The editorial process was delightful-and having published 12 other books I have experienced all varieties of editorial process-and the promotion very professional. If FGC hadn't come to my rescue, these two books, both of which have entered into the life of the Society of Friends, would have become unavailable to a new generation.

As in all Quaker organizations, decision making at FGC is slow, and an author must be patient. Because FGC Publications is a very small press, it does not pay royalties as does a larger commercial press. But no one gets rich writing Quaker books, and the pleasure of working with the FGC staff more than makes up for the slight financial loss.
