I wasn’t always a Quaker who paid attention to Quaker diversity.  But after a few years of seeking deeper connections among Friends in my meeting and yearly meeting, I found myself at the World Gathering of Young Friends in George Fox country in 2005, surrounded by other young adults who were seeking hard for connections with God and one another, and who envisioned an enlivened Society of Friends that has spiritual vitality and authenticity.  And we were finding what we were seeking in worship and fellowship with one another—young Friends from across the spectrum of Quakers.

 

My f/Friend Raul spoke in worship one day (I paraphrase): “At home, I knew that God was powerful beyond my imagination.  And yet, I thought I knew how he worked.  I put God in a box.  And now I can see that God has many ways that he works in the world.  How foolish of me—I knew better.”

 

To me, the beauty of inter-visitation among the diversity of Friends is the opportunity to stretch our understanding of God, to question each other’s (and our own) traditions to find the vitality, and find the weak spots, and

1) Burundi Workcamp – Kamenge
Host Partner: Friends Women’s Association (FWA)
Location: Kamenge, Burundi - On the outskirts of Bujumbura
Objective: The Workcamp Peace Team will build additional rooms for the clinic which primarily serves
HIV positive women and children. Read more about the FWA at http://aglionline.org/Program/fwa.htm.
Housing: Workcampers will stay in an apartment at the Friends Center in downtown Bujumbura.

2) Kenya Workcamp – Friends Peace Centre – Lubao
Host Partner: Friends for Peace and Community Development (FPCD)
Location: Lubao, in western Kenya near Kakamega
Objective: The Workcamp Peace Team will continue building at the Friends Peace Centre-Lubao. Learn

Housing: Workcampers will live at the Peace Centre.

3) Kenya Workcamp – Lugari District
Host Partner: Friends for Peace and Community Development (FPCD)
Location: Lugari District in western Kenya between the town of Eldoret and Mt. Elgon
Objective: The Workcamp Peace Team will build simple houses for vulnerable people whose homes were
destroyed during the violence at the beginning of 2008. (See above for more information.)
Housing: Workcampers will live with Kenyan host families

4) Rwanda Workcamp – Gisenyi
Host Partner: Gisenyi Friends Meeting
Location: Gisenyi, Rwanda. On the northern edge of Lake Kivu, west of Kigali.
Objective: The Workcamp Peace Team will continue construction of Gisenyi Friends Peace Center. This is
the third year for this project. Gisenyi is on Lake Kivu on the border with Congo. Peace work there
includes Rwandans and Congolese.
Housing: Workcampers will live with host families.

5) Uganda Workcamp
Host Partner: Bududa Vocational Institute & Children of Peace - See http://bviuganda.org/index.htm
Location:  Bududa, Uganda about 20 miles north of Mbale on the slopes of Mount Elgon
Objective: Specifics of the work are “under construction”; stay tuned or email Dawn for updates.
Housing: Workcampers will live with Ugandan host families.

Thank you for your interest in taking part in peace team opportunities in the Great Lakes region of Africa.

Below is an application form: including a set of questions. We recommend the following course of action as you consider applying to be a member of one of the teams.

1.    Listen well to the Spirit within to discern how you are led.

2.    If you are a Friend, or are associated with a Friends Meeting or Church, ask for a Clearness Committee to sit with you as you test your leading. If you are not associated with a Friends Church or Meeting, please seek out 3 to 6 people with whom you can discuss your leading to apply for this project and ask them to help you gain clarity. (This group is referred to in the application as your Clearness Committee.) You may wish to use the questions below in this application as a basis for exploration in meeting(s) with your Clearness Committee. If you are approved as a team member it is expected that you will form a Support Committee which could be the same group or could be different people. (See more information below).  

3.    As you answer the questions on the Application be clear and true to yourself.

Applications will be accepted on a first come/first served basis until the workcamp teams are filled. If you have questions, please do not hesitate to email Dawn Rubbert, AGLI Program Manager, via Dawn@aglionline.org. We will inform you regarding acceptance for a specific workcamp within one month of receiving both your application and the report from your clearness committee.

    We hope that after you have sought guidance from the Spirit you will feel led to apply. Whether or not you do, we thank you for your inquiry and for any thought and care you devote to the people of the Great Lakes region as they work to reweave the fabric of their societies.

Burundi Workcamp - Kamenge
Host Partner - Friends Women’s Association (FWA)

Location: Kamenge, Burundi - On the outskirts of Bujumbura

Objective: The Workcamp Peace Team will build three rooms--a waiting room, a room for maternity and children, and a minor surgery room. These three rooms are required to be registered as a clinic by the Burundi Government.

Housing: Workcampers will stay in an apartment at the Friends Center in downtown Bujumbura.

Burundi Workcamp – Up-Country
Host Partner – HROC/Burundi and Mutaho Widows Association

Location: Mutaho and Bugendana, Burundi

Objective: 1) The Workcamp Peace Team will begin building a center for HROC (pronounced he-rock) which stands for Healing and Rebuilding Our Community. 2) The team will also construct a small meeting room and storage room for the Mutaho Widows Association.

Housing: Workcampers will stay with Pastor Sara Gokubwa, leader of the Mutaho Widows Association.

Kenya Workcamp - Lubao
Host Partner - Friends for Peace and Community Development (FPCD)

Location: Lubao, in western Kenya near Kakamega and the border with Uganda.

Objective: The Workcamp Peace Team will continue building the Friends Peace Centre-Lubao.

Housing: Workcampers will live with Kenyan host families.

Kenya Workcamp - Kaimosi
Host Partner - Friends United Meeting (FUM)

Location: Kaimosi Hospital, in western Kenya.

Rwanda Workcamp - Gisesnyi
Location: Gisenyi, Rwanda. On the northern edge of Lake Kivu, west of Kigali.
