Middle East Peace Research Associate
Description:
AFSC is an international peace and social justice organization, and recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Since its founding by Quakers in 1917, the AFSC has brought people of diverse backgrounds together to work for and promote human rights in the United States and throughout the world. Its work is based on a Quaker belief in the dignity and worth of every person, and a faith in the power of love and nonviolence to bring about change.
AFSC is currently engaged in a project to increase teacher workshop offerings in the areas of social science, arts and cultures of the Middle East.
The Research Associate will help:
o Increase awareness of Middle Eastern culture, arts, and local communities within local schools.
o Develop skills of local teachers in creating culturally sensitive teaching materials.
o Voice our commitment to human rights and civil liberties of minority populations.
The Research Associate will be responsible for the following:
o Researching
1. Regional school systems in Los Angeles County and Orange County
2. Arab and Muslim demographics in school districts
3. Potential allies in the school district (e.g., teacher unions, Muslim, Arab, human relations, civil liberties, interfaith organizations)
4. Subject experts (e.g., local colleges and cultural organizations)
5. Conducting a survey of past participants
Skills and Qualifications:
1. Initiative, ability to work independently, open to asking questions when you do not know
2. Dependability, accountability, can communicate about challenges and take responsibility for actions
3. Strong research, writing and communication skills
4. Organizational and planning skills
5. Web skills a plus
Duration: 1 month
Hours: Weekly contact with a minimum of 15 hours weekly. Some work can be done from home; some work in the office
