Job Description

JOB TITLE: Associate Regional Director, Southeastern Region (Full-time)
JOB LOCATION: Atlanta, Georgia
SUPERVISOR: Southeastern Regional Director
SALARY: Based on experience, $50,000 – $58,000, generous benefits.

SUMMARY: The Associate Regional Director reports to and is supported by the regional director with flexible, delegated duties. The associate regional director shares responsibility for the general leadership in the region, general administrative oversight, program direction and evaluation, program supervision and support, public interpretation, and relationships with the Religious Society of Friends and other organizations nationally and in the region. This position is part of a career ladder for the position of regional director and program directors and coordinators are encouraged to apply. Funding for this position is available for four years with the potential for future funding.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program:

1. In consultation with the Regional Director, the ARD has authority and responsibility for program work in the region and consults regularly with the regional director regarding program.
2. Assists with development and evaluation of programs.
3. Provides support, guidance and supervision to program directors and area coordinators.
4. Attends Area Program Committee meetings at least once a year.
5. Assists in grant proposal writing and other aspects of fundraising and development.
6. Assists with program publicity including newsletters, brochures, web page, etc.
7. Public speaking about AFSC programs and mission.

Administration:

1. Consults regularly with the regional director regarding administration and management goals and provides leadership for the region in the absence of the regional director.
2. Supports and consults with the regional director in program budget development, management and review.
3. Shares administrative committee staffing with the regional director.
4. Maintains a relationship with the Society of Friends and other religious and faith-based organizations and with other regional and national peace and justice organizations.

Other:

1. Available for and willing to work on weekends and/or evenings.
2. Travels by car and or airplane as required.
3. Assists the regional director in regional fundraising.
4. Performs other duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Prior experience with:

1. Four years in direct program work in social change, advocacy, grass roots, or peace organization as staff or volunteer. Program administration in a non-profit organization
2. Demonstrated experience in the supervision of staff and volunteers from diverse backgrounds.
3. Oversight of program budgets.
4. Program development, oversight and evaluation.
5. Fundraising and budget development for programs.
6. Familiarity with consensus decision making.
7. Demonstrated experience in planning media campaigns.

Skills and abilities in:

1. Facilitating and participating in a consultative decision-making processes on complex issues.
2. Working as part of a management team.
3. Communicating effectively in person and in writing.
4. Demonstrated conflict resolution/transformation skills.
5. Working with people of different cultural backgrounds and political viewpoints.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.Build a working relationship between teachers and parents of the African and Hispanic immigrant youth in the Dayton Public Schools with English as a Second Language (ESL) programs.
2.Organize youth, parents, and teachers in the Dayton Public School with ESL programs to attend educational workshops on cross-cultural communication skills.
3.Organize youth to attend educational workshops on conflict resolution and alternatives to violence behaviors among youth in the Dayton Public Schools with ESL programs.
4.Organize African and Latino youth, and African-American youth to attend cross-cultural events and exchanges in the Greater Dayton Area.
5.Assist the Program Director in preparing program quarterly and/or annual reports for the program advisory committee, Human Migration & Mobility Network and the Regional Executive Committee; and in the implementation of any special program tasks as requested.
6.Attend regional staff meetings Executive Committee meetings when necessary, and other relevant AFSC-wide meetings or retreats.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1.Requires a minimum of 3 years experience of social change organizing youth to be community leaders with an organization similar to AFSC. Ability to recruit, train and supervise youth and volunteers.
2.Ability and experience doing education advocacy for youth of color at local or state levels in the United States. Demonstrated knowledge/experience of the Dayton Board of Education structure is desirable.
3.Demonstrated knowledge/experience to work collaboratively in a multicultural context, and to bring people together across lines of race, culture, ethnicity, religion, and other differences.
4.Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, to work according to program work plans in consultation with the program director. Ability to take the initiative, manage priorities and work independently on specific issues.
5.Ability to build mutually respectful relationships with co-workers, constituents, partners, public officials, and the community
6.Demonstrated analytical and communications skills; required fluency in spoken and written English, and fluent in another language (Swahili, Spanish, and or Arabic languages preferred).
7.Experience or willingness to learn how to utilize the media to create public awareness about issues.
8.Ability to plan and facilitate educational workshops for youth, and adults.
9.Demonstrated computer skills (PC/Windows), particularly word processing spreadsheet and database applications (MS office), and e-mail. Good analytical skills and experience doing internet research, and e-campaigns using a constituency focused data base.
10.Ability to travel, attend frequent evening and weekend meetings, and activities. Must have a valid drivers’ license and have access to a car or other reliable transportation.

Background: The work of the American Friends Service Committee to promote peace, social justice and humanitarian service, is rooted in the experience and faith of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). While AFSC staff is not required to belong to any particular denomination or faith, they are expected to understand and support the Quaker foundations of the work of AFSC. These guiding principals are based on the belief in that of God in every person, and the right of each person to reach his or her full potential.

Summary of Responsibilities: The Development Associate is responsible for administrative support for the Leadership Gift and Grant Officers, for timely entry and acknowledgement of gifts as well as for development activities related to small to mid-level donors. In this capacity the Associate is responsible for entering and maintaining records, database and acknowledgements. Working in a team with the Leadership Gift and Grant Officers as well as with the Regional Director, the Associate coordinates activities such as local appeals and events. The Associate will interface with program staff in relation to development efforts. This position entails occasional weekend or evening meetings as well as occasional travel to the Central Valley and to national meetings.

Responsibilities:

1. Implement efforts to increase the giving of small- and mid-level donors (up to $1,000) through calls, letters, and donor engagement activities. Interpret the work of the AFSC in articulate, compelling and creative ways. Coordinate with the Leadership Gifts Officer on donors that grow to the major gifts level.

2. Plan, in discussion with the supervisor, and coordinate regional fundraising events/dinners, working with regional and national staff. Facilitate joint efforts of regional and national fundraising so as to ensure optimum use of resources and co-coordinated fundraising and service to donors.

3. Provide administrative support for the Leadership Gift and Grant Officers and the good functioning of the development office which raises funds for all AFSC, including the Pacific Mountain Region.

4. Maintain a consistent presence in the office to receive phone calls and process correspondence from donors or others regarding development issues. Research information, pass on inquiries as needed and ensure timeliness in responding to all requests.

5. Assure that donor records in Raiser’s Edge (RE), including notes of cultivation, solicitation actions and donor information of relevance to AFSC are entered promptly, are up-to-date and accurate.

6. Co-ordinate various kinds of acknowledgements and submission of receipts and stewardship reports to donors.

7. Design and coordinate mailing of regional appeals, working with regional and national staff and vendors as well as advise on regional newsletters and brochures.


8. Produce regular development reports: financial & activities summaries to the region and national development office.

9. Consult as necessary with fundraising colleagues, participate in conference calls, and attend national gatherings of all AFSC fundraisers. Meet regularly with Development staff in PMRO and the Regional Director. As requested, attend meetings of the regional staff and committee meetings as appropriate.

Summary of Development Department: Development staff, in cooperation with program staff, administrative staff and committee members, raises general and restricted funds for AFSC. Solicitations are carried out by mail appeals to current and prospective donors; by cultivation and personal visits for outright major and planned gifts, and for large annual gifts; by preparation of program proposals and reports to foundations and by other fundraising methods as are appropriate and feasible.

Summary of Job Responsibilities: The Leadership Gift Officer focuses on the cultivation and solicitation of individuals who have the greatest potential for supporting AFSC’s programs. The Leadership Gift Officer relates to donors who require the most deftly carried out cultivation leading to solicitation of major outright and planned gifts, including bequest intentions. He/she must coordinate the involvement of other development staff, program staff, and volunteers in the cultivation process so that priorities are kept in view, deadlines are met, and duplication of effort or action at cross purposes is avoided.

Responsibilities:

1. Raise funds for all work of the AFSC through carefully planned cultivation and solicitation of individuals who have the means to make very large outright, blended or planned gifts, including bequest intentions.

2. Utilizing prospect research and through discussions with donors, staff and committee members, qualify donors’ capacity to make major gifts. If the donor does not have the capacity and inclination to give a major gift to AFSC, assign the donor appropriately.

3. Increase current donors’ or potential donors’ interest in and financial commitment to, AFSC through visits, calls, letters, and donor engagement activities. Interpret the work of the AFSC in articulate, compelling and creative ways. The Leadership Gift Officer is expected to make 125 to 150 visits per year.

4. Participate in regular donor strategy sessions. Taking into account the complex financial situations and organizational relationships of many of AFSC’s most sophisticated donors, develop the most effective cultivation plans and introduce the most compelling gift options.

5. Involve program and senior administrative staff, committee members, and board members in the cultivation and solicitation of major gift prospects. Provide coaching and support as needed.

6. Reviewing donors’ complex financial situations, develop the most appropriate outright, planned, and blended gift options. Work with gift planning staff as necessary.

7. Personally acknowledge gifts from assigned donors and coordinate additional acknowledgments.

8. Maintain donor records on Raiser’s Edge, including notes of cultivation and solicitation actions and donor’s personal information of relevance to AFSC.

9. Keep informed about the total program work of the AFSC through contacts with program staff, attendance of events, and reading materials.

10. Consult as necessary with fundraising colleagues, participate in conference calls, and attend national gatherings of all AFSC fundraisers.

11. Supervise Development Associate or other support staff as required.

Compensation: Salary Range # 17 - Exempt - Comprehensive medical and hospitalization plan; term life, accident and salary continuation insurances, defined benefit pension plan, plus fringe benefits; participation in unemployment and worker’s compensation and social security.

Summary of Responsibilities: The Regional Director is the lead staff person in the Middle Atlantic Region. S/he provides leadership and support to the Regional Executive Committee and facilitates the implementation of their decisions. The Director is supervised by the Associate General Secretary for US Programs based in Philadelphia, PA. The Director is primarily responsible for the implementation within the region of the organization’s Strategic Plan, is the primary spokesperson for the region, interpreting its program and the principles that undergird the work of the AFSC. S/he and the regional clerk (chairperson of the Executive Committee), work as a team to provide a unified vision for the work of the region. S/he works collaboratively with staff, committee members and other volunteers to give local expression to the broader organizational goals.

Additional responsibilities include: staff supervision and support; fiscal management of the region’s resources; coordination of outreach activities including communications with the Religious Society of Friends and other peace and social and economic justice organizations within the region; and fundraising.

The Middle Atlantic Region is one of nine US regions within the American Friends Service Committee, and currently carries out program in the District of Columbia, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Regional programs include work on Peace and Demilitarization, and Youth, Migration and Mobility, Social and Economic justice.

Responsibilities of the Regional Director include:

Leadership – The Director must be a sensitive, strategic thinker with excellent listening skills who is able to marry local/internal perspectives to larger peace and social justice issues. S/he works closely with the Associate Regional Director other staff, and committee members to develop programs in the Middle Atlantic Region. The Director assures that there are linkages between regional program and activities, and work of other program units to achieve the goals of the AFSC Strategic Plan.

S/he nurtures the growth of regional staff to reach their potential and the sense of calling to the work of the region. The Director serves as staff to the Regional Executive Committee and may staff other administrative and/or program committees in the region as necessary. In close collaboration with the Executive Committee clerk s/he participates in the planning for the meetings, provides support and leadership to the committee as it does its work and assures that its decisions are implemented.

Program Development and Evaluation – Work collaboratively with Associate Regional Direct and regional staff and committees to oversee program development and support. Make program visits to the area offices within the region as required for program support and guidance.

Regional/National Program Planning - Represent regional program perspectives, communicating regional realities and input to the national level of the organization and communicate national concerns and decisions to regional staff and committees. Serve on organization-wide staff leadership groups. Participate in development and refreshment of the Strategic Plan.

Staff Supervision and Support - Approve all regional staff hires and terminations. In close consultation with the Associate Regional Director, plan the orientation and training, and assure the completion of annual staff performance evaluations for all regional staff. Support staff development and ongoing professional training within and outside of the AFSC. Provide direct supervision of the Associate Regional Director and other selected program and administrative staff, and is responsible for their performance evaluations. Encourage effective and productive relationships among staff and a team approach to the overall work, delegating specific program and administrative responsibilities to the Associate Regional Director as appropriate.

Fiscal Management - Prepare an annual budget and ensure fiscal integrity of the region and its programs through management and oversight of the budget and financial reporting processes; ensure that accounting procedures as defined by AFSC are followed within the region. Monitor regional expenses; work with the Finance and Development Committee in the preparation of the regional program plan and budget.

Outreach and Communications with the Religious Society of Friends (Quaker) - Maintain communications with the Religious Society of Friends coordinating, planning, and supporting outreach to Friends groups in the region.
Work with regional staff, the Outreach and Executive Committees, and Corporation members and others to assure AFSC participation in the yearly meetings, and other Friends activities, as appropriate.

Fundraising - Work in close collaboration with the Associate Regional Director, the MAR Finance and Development Committee, and in partnership with members of the National Development Department to help develop, nurture and implement an evolving regional fundraising plan. Carry primary responsibility for the advancement of the organization’s fundraising plan at the regional level.

Public Relations - Carry particular responsibility for the use and implementation of the AFSC’s Communications Policy within the region. Work collaboratively with staff and committee to maintain updated information on regional programs on AFSC’s website. Be prepared to respond to all types of media representing the perspectives of the Service Committee on programmatic and policy issues that have impact on our work.

Administrative Committee Support – Work closely with the regional clerk to facilitate the work of the Middle Atlantic Region’s Executive Committee. In close consultation with the Associate Regional Director, support other administrative committees as needed; supporting committee clerks in agenda preparation and the effective movement of the work, and the implementation of committee decisions. (Note: With exception of the Executive Committee, these responsibilities may be delegated to the Associate Regional Director).

Affirmative Action - Work in consultation with the region’s Affirmative Action Committee, the Office of Inclusion staff, and other staff as appropriate, to apply the AFSC’s Affirmative Action policies to the program and administrative functioning of the region. Work in close collaboration with the clerk of the Nominating Committee to facilitate the nomination process for regional committee membership to assure the implementation of Affirmative Action goals in committee representation.

JOB TITLE: Gulf Coast Area Program Coordinator

LOCATION: New Orleans, Louisiana

The Southeastern Regional Office (SERO) of the AFSC operates programs for economic and social justice and peace in North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Louisiana. SERO’s program work focuses on Human Migration and Mobility, Peace Education, Healing Justice and Material Assistance.

Summary of Program Description:
The Gulf Coast Program, based in New Orleans, Louisiana, is designed to respond to the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina. Program activities include youth leadership development, empowerment and networking in the Gulf Coast Area. The work is carried out in collaboration with local youth, residents and community partners to support them in recovering and reclaiming communities affected by Hurricane Katrina.

AFSC seeks to reverse this trend of criminalization and incarceration of youth in New Orleans by identifying youth at risk, providing educational experiences and leadership development training to empower them to effectively advocate for more resources for youth programming. Through our program local youth will learn advocacy skills to engage government entities in reversing practice and policy changes that contribute to increasing numbers of youth ending up in the School-to-Prison Pipeline.

In each year the program will partner with local schools and civic organizations to identify youth that the program will work with for six to nine months to develop the skills needed to become effective advocates for change.

SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: The Area Coordinator supports field staff to develop outcomes- based program planning and management. S/he is responsible for the supervision of staff, interns, and volunteers; fund raising; budget management; and other administrative duties as required. The Gulf Coast Area Program Coordinator is supervised by the Associate Regional Director.

The minimum qualifications for the Coordinator position include three years demonstrated experience in program management and staff supervision; experience with community organizing and capacity building; and youth organizing.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program:

1. Implement a program designed to interrupt the School-to-Prison Pipeline collaborating with local partner organizations and other key stakeholders in the area.
2. Collaborate with and support relevant organizations working to combat the School-to-Prison Pipeline and ensure that youth play an integral part in the rebuilding effort in post-Katrina New Orleans.
3. Ensure that AFSC’s work responds to community needs and develops local capacities so that target communities can use their skills and voices to work for change.
4. Develop an efficient and effective monitoring and evaluation plan to ensure program objectives and results are achieved in a timely fashion.
5. Serve as spokesperson for the Gulf Coast program and represent the AFSC throughout the Gulf Coast in the media, before public officials, and at relevant Friends gatherings.
6. Recruit, train and involve volunteers in the work with AFSC.

Administration:
1. Supervise all AFSC staff in the Gulf Coast Area program.
2. Prepare the area program budget; maintain budget oversight, including submission of accurate and regular income and expense ledgers. Responsible for any cash or checking accounts and maintain appropriate balances in those accounts.
3. Help with fundraising, including seeking funding for specific projects, in conjunction with development staff.
4. Participate in the life of the Southeast Region by attending regional staff and committee meetings and retreats, as required.
5. Communicate and coordinate with other AFSC offices and the National Office and participate in their activities as appropriate.
6. Reach out to local Quakers in the Gulf Coast region to inform them of the ongoing work of the AFSC.

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Peace Building Program Director will develop and implement the peace building work of the AFSC in the Southeastern Region. The position will focus on: demilitarization; counter recruitment/alternatives for youth; advocacy and peace education campaigns; conflict resolution; and promoting non-violence, particularly among youth. The position will be flexible to respond and contribute to national AFSC peace building and conflict resolution initiatives and regional issues. There is a high expectation of field work across the state of Georgia as well as networking throughout the region.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Collaborate with AFSC national staff, particularly the Youth and Militarism Task Force, to achieve broader organizational goals on Youth and Militarism, peace building, and conflict resolution.
2. Plan, initiate, and implement activities that advance the peace goals of the organization based on a clearly articulated annual work plan.
3. Strengthen the state-wide network in Georgia to build grassroots participation in the movement against war. Work with the Georgia Peace and Justice Coalition and liaise with national peace groups in order to advance peace work in Georgia.
4. Enhance collaboration between the peace movement and local and statewide initiatives to promote economic and social justice
5. Participate in community organizing, research, public education and develop resource materials around peace and conflict resolution issues.
6. Serve as a spokesperson and represent the AFSC in the media, before public officials and at relevant Friends gatherings.
7. Facilitate the work of volunteers and recruit, train and involve volunteers.
8. Develop and maintain contacts within communities of color, the LGBT community, the peace community (including Quakers), university students and others to: 1) build bridges between these constituencies and 2) to participate in ongoing activities.
9. Collaborate with Southeastern Region (SERO) program staff to develop and implement plans and outreach strategies for building a grassroots constituency.
10. Seek funding from donors for specific projects in conjunction with the Associate Regional Director.

11. Develop and monitor the budget for the program.

12. Prepare articles and promotional materials relevant to peace work.

13. Prepare program reports for the Executive Committee and supervisors as required.

14. Attend regional staff meetings and Executive Committee meetings when appropriate as well as relevant national AFSC meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS:
